What Is Bemotrizinol? The New US Sunscreen Filter

What bemotrizinol is, why the US hasn't had it until now, and why the formula around it still decides everything.

In short
Bemotrizinol, or BEMT, is the first new active ingredient the FDA has added to the sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s. It's broad-spectrum, very photostable, and it feels lighter than most of the filters we've had access to in the US. It's also capped at 6% of a formula, which on its own, is unlikely to reach the SPF 30 most dermatologists recommend. Its main advantage is that it helps stabilize other UV filters, allowing them to work better together and strengthening the overall protection they provide. Every BEMT sunscreen you see will still be built on the filters we already had.
