Clinical Testing

There's a Method to Our Protection

Sunscreen is one of the most technically challenging categories in skincare. We're obsessive about the chemistry and relentless about the testing, and go well past what's required on both. Every study behind Cloudwear is below.

SPF Determination

SPF Determination

What it tests: How much UVB protection the formula gives, the SPF number on the bottle.

Cloudwear's SPF value was verified by two independent labs, tested at 30 and 46, labeled at SPF 30.

Broad Spectrum

Broad Spectrum

What it tests: Whether the formula protects across the full UV range, not just the UVB that SPF measures.

Cloudwear reached a critical wavelength greater than 370 nm, the FDA requirement for a broad-spectrum label.

UVA PA+ Rating

UVA PA+ Rating

What it tests: How much UVA protection the formula actually delivers, graded on the PA scale instead of a pass or fail.

Cloudwear measured a UVA protection factor of 9.4, which earns a PA+++ grade, high protection against the rays behind premature aging and uneven tone.

UVA Photostability

UVA Photostability

What it tests: Whether UVA protection lasts, measured against its starting level after 2, 4 and 8 hours of UV exposure.

Cloudwear kept 98.2% of its UVA defense after 2 hours, and 89.9% after 8.

Corneometry Hydration Studies

Corneometry Hydration Studies

What it tests: How much the formula hydrates skin, how long it lasts, and whether daily use improves skin's hydration over time.

Cloudwear raised skin hydration 54.7% at 15 minutes, still 25.7% higher at 8 hours. After 28 days of daily use, hydration measured 17.0% above where it started. 100% of participants showed a measured increase in both studies.

HRIPT Sensitization Study

HRIPT Sensitization Study

What it tests: Whether the formula irritates skin or triggers an allergic reaction, patch-tested on 100 people.

Cloudwear scored an irritation index of 0.00, the lowest possible, with no sensitization and no reactions in anyone.

Comedogenicity + Acnegenicity Study

Comedogenicity + Acnegenicity Study

What it tests: Whether the formula clogs pores or causes breakouts, counted on the faces of 32 women with acne-prone skin over 28 days.

Cloudwear showed no significant increase in either, and was clinically considered non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.

Sensitive Skin Study

Sensitive Skin Study

What it tests: Whether sensitive skin tolerates the formula in real daily use, with a dermatologist assessing skin at the start and again after 28 days.

Across 33 women with self-declared sensitive skin, phototypes I through VI, Cloudwear caused no reactions in anyone and was graded very good for skin acceptability.
